Session 1
Colonial Notes
Continental Currency February 17, 1776 $7 PMG Choice About Unc 58 EPQ. High grade examples from this issue are always highly sought after and this one is a real beauty. Bold signatures, large margins and just some light handing give this note excellent eye appeal for the grade.
Continental Currency February 17, 1776 $8 PMG About Uncirculated 55 EPQ. A lovely, high grade note from this desirable February 1776 issue that is boldly printed, well signed with just a light corner fold keeping the Choice New grade out of reach.
Continental Currency April 11, 1778 $8 PMG About Uncirculated 53. This April 1778 is by far the scarcest of all the Continental Currency emissions. It was heavily counterfeited by the British and therefore notes were pulled from circulation quickly leaving relatively few survivors today. This note is undoubtedly genuine with bold signatures, bright paper and superb eye appeal. Whatever circulation accounted for the assigned third party grade is very difficult to discern through the holder. A very similar note to a couple examples that we have sold this year, both of which realized around $2,000 each.
Continental Currency January 14, 1779 $1 Extremely Fine. The back is very boldly printed on this attractive, well-margined Continental $1 numbered 16096. This is a tougher low denomination note from this final Continental emission. "UNITED STATES OF NORTH AMERICA" was used for the first time with the new border cuts for this issue. John Read and James Dundas signed this lightly handled note.
Connecticut January 2, 1775 40s Slash Cancel About New. An astounding example of this scarcer January 1775 issue that has three bright signatures, exceptional print quality and mountainous embossing seen throughout. The eye appeal is that of a screaming gem note. Only the fourth example of this highest denomination that we have sold.
Connecticut July 1, 1775 2s/6d Good-Very Good, backed. A satisfying example of this tougher issue that looks much nicer but which has been backed due to some internal tearing.
Connecticut June 7, 1776 1s Uncanceled Superb Gem New. A stellar and stunning example that is likely the nicest example that we have ever seen in our time here at Heritage. The paper is bright white, with a bold signature and serial number, large margins and perfect centering. The embossing is so boldly impressed that the note is practically falling over itself. A prize example that will fit wonderfully into anyone's high grade type set.
Connecticut June 7, 1776 1s/3d Uncanceled About New. From the face this uncanceled Connecticut note faces up like a well printed and attractive About New note. The back reveals multiple restorations along the center fold and around the edges. While this is a very common denomination for the June 19th issue it is downright rare for the June 7th issue.
Connecticut June 7, 1776 1s/3d Very Good, backed. A decent note that appears to be uncanceled but it is hard to tell as the note has been backed.
Connecticut June 7, 1776 3s Good-Very Good, backed. Most of the note remains intact and has a decent appearance but it has been backed.
Connecticut June 7, 1776 5s Very Good, backed. This note actually faces up very well but has some problems and therefore has been backed.
Connecticut June 19, 1776 9d Uncanceled Very Fine-Extremely Fine, tears. This is easily the nicest note of this group of raw notes as it is embossed, but there are three or four edge tears with one having an old tape strip over that side and the upper corners show wear. Uncanceled as well and scarce as such.
Connecticut June 19, 1776 9d Good. The area of paper loss at the bottom and numerous splits and tears have reduced the grade on this piece. It is difficult to discern whether the note is torn at bottom center or was slash cancelled. Comptroller Porter's registration notation is seen in red ink on the back. There will be no returns on this lot for any reason.
Connecticut June 19, 1776 1s Very Fine, backed. A very nice example that looks Very Fine or perhaps better but which has been backed due to a weak center fold.
Connecticut June 19, 1776 1s/3d Fine, backed. A decent example of this 1776 issue that has been backed due to internal tearing.
Connecticut June 19, 1776 1s/6d Uncanceled PMG Choice Uncirculated 63. A lovely uncanceled note with good margins, exceptional printing and deep embossing. It certainly looks like an original note which leaves us a little mystified as to what happened to the EPQ designation.
Connecticut June 19, 1776 2s/6d Very Fine, backed. A pleasing example of this 1776 Connecticut issue that has some center fold issues which has resulted in the note being backed.
Connecticut October 11, 1777 3d Slash Cancel Printed on White Paper PMG About Uncirculated 55 EPQ. A lovely example of this small change note that is well margined, boldly signed and very well embossed. Printed on the much scarcer white paper, this slash canceled note should find a happy home in someone's collection.
Connecticut October 11, 1777 5d Uncanceled Choice New. Three huge margins and a tighter fourth are seen on this boldly signed and incredibly well embossed small change note. The eye appeal is superb for the grade and these 1777 notes are far scarcer uncanceled than most of the 1775 and 1776 issues.
Connecticut October 11, 1777 5d Slash Cancel Choice New. An astounding original example with great embossing, bold signature and superb print quality. But for a couple of very minor corner bends we would not hesitate to qualify this gorgeous note as a screaming gem.
Connecticut March 1, 1780 2s/6d Very Fine, backed. A very attractive hole canceled note that has been backed.
Connecticut March 1, 1780 20s Very Fine, backed. The typical hole cancel is seen on this Very Fine or better note that is bright and well margined but backed.
Connecticut June 1, 1780 2s/6d Very Fine, backed. A decent looking hole canceled note that is well signed and numbered but with backing.
Connecticut Pay Table Office. July 11, 1784. Extremely Fine. A boldly signed and wonderfully embossed Pay Table Office dated July 11, 1784.
Connecticut Pay Table Office. June 19, 1784. Extremely Fine. An enormously margined and wonderfully embossed example of this Pay Table office that is hand-dated and very attractive.
Connecticut Interest Payment Certificate. March 13, 1792. About New. A lovely certificate issued for the payment of interest. Signed by Kingsbury and dated March 13, 1792 it is cut canceled and contains a single fold.
Connecticut Civil List. September 13, 1794. About New. A wonderfully embossed and fresh example paid to William Mosley. This Civil List was signed by Comptroller John Porter and also Andrew Kingsbury as Treasurer.
Connecticut Civil List. September 30, 1794. Extremely Fine-About New. A wonderful example of this Civil List dated September 30, 1794. Signed by John Porter, Comptroller and Andrew Kingsbury as Treasurer. Superbly embossed and wonderfully margined with the natural indent at left.
Connecticut Interest Payment Certificate. February 29, 1792. Very Fine. A cut canceled example of this certificate that was "Issued for the payment of Interest." Signed by Andrew Kingsbury, Comptroller and wonderfully embossed.
Connecticut Treasury Office. June 1, 1782. Very Fine. A bright and well embossed Treasury Office certificate with typeset date June 1, 1782 and signed by J. Lawrence as Treasurer. Made out to Isaiah Robbins with the usual plethora of period endorsements on the back. A few small tears do little to affect the eye appeal of this note.
Connecticut Treasury Office. June 1, 1782. Very Fine. This hole canceled Treasury Office certificate has typeset date, hole cancel and is signed by J. Lawrence, Treasurer. There are a couple of tears from the bottom border. The usual slew of period endorsements are seen on the back.
Georgia 1776 $1/2 Very Fine+. A very well margined and attractive example of this fractional denomination note that faces up very well but which has center fold tears that have been reinforced with hinges.
Maryland January 1, 1767 $1 Very Fine. A solid Very Fine or somewhat better in terms of technical detail that has a bright face and crisp with solid signatures and bold embossing. There are a couple of edge tears and some weakness along one of the center folds but the eye appeal is far better than most examples that we see from this issue. The 1767 notes are usually found in tatters and while almost all have some problems this note has far fewer than most.
Maryland April 10, 1774 $1/6 Very Fine. A lovely example of this fractional denomination note, but with a couple of masked stains seen primarily at the back lower right. These low denomination notes circulated freely during this time period and often circulated heavily so lightly circulated examples are always a pleasant surprise.
Maryland April 10, 1774 $1 PMG About Uncirculated 55. A lovely, high grade example of this Maryland issue that is bright, well signed and extremely well printed. Clearly an attractive and original note that is worthy of all the accolades afforded to notes of its kind. The $1 and $2 denominations of this issue are clearly much scarcer than the $4, $6 and $8 notes which are most frequently seen.
Massachusetts June 18, 1776 1s/8d About New. An astounding example of this very scarce denomination as we have only sold two prior to this one, and they both paled in comparison to this lovely example. A very broadly margined note with a single center fold and excellent print quality for this condition challenged issue. A few very small pinholes are seen but they do very little to distract from the eye appeal of this beauty.
Massachusetts June 18, 1776 2s/4d PMG Choice Very Fine 35 EPQ. This is the second example of this rare denomination that we have ever had the chance to offer individually. Very well margined with boldly executed signature and the folds normally indicative of a fully Extremely Fine grade. Only in the arena of colonial currency can one find these closet rarities without much attention paid to them. If this was a large type note of this rarity it would be a strong five figure item. With that said, this particular 1776 issue has never been popular with collectors due to the coarse paper used which was not printed on very well.
Massachusetts Treasury Tax Collector's Certificate. November 1782. Very Fine-Extremely Fine. A lovely example of this treasury tax collector certificate dated November 1782. The signature of Thomas Ivers, Treasurer has been pen cancelled. There is a little soiling on the back and a small spindle hole is noticed at center, but the face is bright. This is a very desirable piece that should find a happy new home amongst the hobby's blossoming collectors of Colonial era fiscal paper.
State of Massachusetts-Bay £10 Treasury Certificate Comm'tte War at 6% Interest October 14, 1778. Anderson MA-4. Extremely Fine. This certificate was issued to pay drafts of the Board of War. This example has solid serial number 888. A resolve was passed on Dec. 6, 1776 requiring that a seal be placed over the handwritten amount of the certificates as a means to prevent alteration of the face value. The seal includes a tree and clasped hands along with the inscription DAT VIRES UNIO. Portions of the seal are visible. This certificate has been cancelled by means of several "X"s inked over the signature of H. Gardner, Treasurer and includes notations written along the right margin stating that the first year of interest was paid. The indented left margin was also trimmed as part of the cancellation process. This note is a pleasing Extremely Fine or a little better. This certificate is listed as R4, 76-200 known, in William G. Anderson's The Price of Liberty: The Public Debt of the American Revolution.
Massachusetts Treasury Certificate, Boston April 1, 1786. Very Fine - Extremely Fine. A lovely example of this Massachusetts Treasury Certificate that is bright, crisp and wonderfully embossed and appears About New at first glance. Signed by Treasurer Thomas Ivers and issued to S. Tufts.
New Hampshire April 29, 1780 $5 Very Fine+. A wonderfully margined example of this typically hole canceled New Hampshire series that has a couple of main folds and a couple of light corner handling bends.
New Jersey June 22, 1756 12s Gem New. This is the largest margined example of this early 1756 issue that your cataloger can ever recall having seen. We say this because true gems are rare with a capital "R" due to the fact that they were printed so closely together on sheets. This one comes about as close as we've seen to having 100% full margins. As expected the paper is crisp and fresh, with superb printing, bold signatures and incredible embossing. An unfathomably gorgeous example of this issue that will be highly coveted by anyone who sees it.
New Jersey June 22, 1756 30s Very Good-Fine. A rare denomination no matter how you slice it. Most of the surviving examples from this series are nice uncirculated notes but these higher denomination notes are quite rare because they circulated freely in commerce and very few survived. This is only the second example that we have sold which is somewhat misleading since a check of our auction archives shows four entries, but those are all the same note auctioned a few times over the years. From the face this note is a solid Fine but the back is somewhat weaker resembling a Very Good note. This note is basically problem free which is a miracle considering that almost all of these early Jersey notes have some problems.
New Jersey May 1, 1758 £3 PMG Very Fine 25. An attractive and utterly problem free example of this scarce and very desirable denomination. Those two adjectives are rarely used in conjunction with the same 1758 New Jersey note since most have splits, tears, pinholes and other such maladies. This note is well signed, boldly printed and as original as they come.
New Jersey April 8, 1762 £3 PMG Choice Fine 15 Net. A lovely example of this scarce issue and denomination. The note itself faces up as a nice Very Fine with good print detail and bold signatures. The nature print on the back is also very well defined. PMG has noted stain repairs but there doesn't appear to be much going on there. The astute colonial currency collector will realize the value of acquiring this piece.
New Jersey December 31, 1763 18d PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ. Singlehandedly the loveliest example of this New Jersey issue that we have ever handled. Huge margins on all sides, bold signatures, exceptional print detail and cardboard crisp paper. Not to be confused with the March 1776 issue from which gems are plentiful they rarely are seen from the 1763 series due to extreme closeness of the notes on the sheet.
New Jersey March 25, 1776 30s Gem New. A superbly embossed and crackling fresh example of this common New Jersey series that has been blessed with plentiful margins, perfect centering and bold signatures. We don't usually see these raw anymore but this one is lovely to see out of a holder.
New Jersey January 9, 1781 1s/6d PMG Choice Uncirculated 63 EPQ. A lovely example of this much scarcer 1781 New Jersey issue from which uncirculated examples are rarely found. The print detail is exceptional and the signatures and serial number remain bold. Healthy embossing is easily detected through the third party holder. While higher circulated grade notes are seen sometimes for the pence denomination notes they are not often encountered for the higher denomination notes. A lovely note that will satisfy the fussiest of colonial collectors who understands true condition rarity when it presents itself.
New Jersey 1786 12s Very Fine. One of the nicest printed examples of this later date New Jersey issue that we have seen. From the face the print quality is unfathomably beautiful, the signatures are bold and the margins bountiful on all sides. Plenty of original embossing shows through to the back. Values on this issue has been battered in recent years due to the appearance and reappearance of a handful of problemed and restored examples. This note is clearly near the top of the condition census and it realized around $2,750 in a Stacks sale a couple of years ago.
New York April 15, 1758 £10 About New. This is easily one of the nicest examples that we have ever handled of this generally condition challenged issue. There is a single center fold and a corner bump, but surprisingly the note has retained three bold signatures, superb detail on the New York Coat of Arms and with two or three 1 mm edge nicks in the top border. A well margined and truly lovely note that will be recognized by specialists for the great opportunity that it is.
New York August 2, 1775 (Water Works) 4s Very Choice New. A wonderfully embossed and spectacular Water Works note that has good signatures and sublime paper surface quality. Only a slightly more narrow top margin keeps the gem grade out of reach.
New York August 13, 1776 $10 Choice About New. Behemoth margins are seen on all sides of this wonderful New York note. The eye appeal of this example is second to none and, although we are having a hard time detecting any real folds, there seems to be enough handling to keep this note out of the New grade range.
North Carolina April 23, 1761 20s PCGS Apparent Very Fine 20. Although faded, all four signatures remain clearly visible. Only 6506 of these notes were printed and this example is numbered 1963. Numerous endorsements are seen on the back of this piece of Proclamation Money. A repaired central split was mentioned as the reason for the apparent grade.
North Carolina April 23, 1761 20s PCGS Apparent Fine 15. Numbered 5550 of 6506 examples printed, all four signatures are clearly seen on this 20 shillings piece. A couple of endorsements are observed on the back. PCGS mentioned minor edge tears and repaired as the reasons for the apparent grade.
North Carolina December, 1768 10s PMG Choice Fine 15 Net. Detail of a nearly Extremely Fine note PMG has noted split repairs along the center fold. The margins are broad all around, the paper is bright and the signatures remain strong with some of the usual pen endorsements on the back.
North Carolina December, 1768 £3 PCGS Apparent Very Fine 20. Decent margins are observed on this example numbered 321. All four signatures are attractive. Numerous endorsements and several numeric calculations are seen on the back. Repaired edge splits and pinholes were provided as the reason for the apparent grade by PCGS.
North Carolina December, 1768 £3 PCGS Apparent Fine 15. Well-margined, this boldly printed £3 example is numbered 142. A number of endorsements are viewed on the back. Repaired edge splits were mentioned by PCGS as the reason for the apparent grade.
North Carolina December, 1771 2s/6d PCGS Apparent Fine 15. Boldly printed and well-signed, this example displays the strengthened shading of the house vignette. A repaired central split was cited by PCGS as the reason for the apparent grade.
Pennsylvania March 20, 1771 10s Francis Hopkinson PMG Extremely Fine 40 Net. A superb example for the grade as it appears to have a technical grade of About New and has been blessed with gigantic margins. PMG mentions a restoration but it is wholly confined to the broad right margin. Francis Hopkinson was a signer of the Declaration of Independence from Pennsylvania and the new Newman states it adds $1,000 to the value of the note, which would be worth $400-$500 on its own merits. While John Hart notes are relatively common and a slew of John Morton notes have hit the marketplace recently, Hopkinson signatures are genuinely very scarce and are probably behind George Clymer in terms of scarcity. An astounding note that is destined for the finest of colonial currency collections and we are fairly certain that its new owner will be proud to display it to his friends.
Pennsylvania March 20, 1771 15s PMG About Uncirculated 53 Net. A lovely example of this much scarcer 1771 issue that is a strong About New example that has been slightly downgraded due to a near meaningless lower corner repair. The paper is crisp, the inks are colorful and all three signatures remain bold.
Pennsylvania April 3, 1772 9d Extremely Fine. One of the more attractive examples we've offered, this nine pence note was signed by Thomas Fisher and is numbered 24392. Plate letter B is observed. Numerous mica flakes are seen. This denomination is not priced above VF in Newman. A small piece of the lower left corner is missing.
Pennsylvania March 20, 1773 6s New. Well-printed, this Cape Henlopen Lighthouse note is quite attractive and is the nicest example we have offered. This plate "B" variety was signed by Jacob Winey, Frederick Kuhl, and Charles Jervis. Kuhl served on the Council of Safety of the Province of Pennsylvania which essentially was in charge of the militia. £12,000 worth of notes were issued in support of the construction of the Cape Henlopen Lighthouse. Only 3000 of this variety were printed. Vessels were guided by the lighthouse through the dangerous waters between the Atlantic Ocean and Delaware Bay for over 150 years. The lighthouse was abandoned in 1924 and succumbed to the elements in 1926.
Pennsylvania March 20, 1773 16s PMG Choice Very Fine 35. A lovely quarter folded example of this scarcer Lighthouse issue that appears to have a technical grade of Extremely Fine. Well margined and boldly signed it faces up rather well for the grade.
Pennsylvania October 1, 1773 50s About New. A center fold is observed on this example signed by Samuel Fisher, Stephen Carmick, and George Emlen, Jr. Numerous mica flakes glisten on this fifty shillings piece. This example is numbered 6069. This was the highest denomination for this issue.
Pennsylvania April 25, 1776 9d Gem New. A more challenging issue for small change notes but this one is the cream of the crop. Very ample margins for this issue this note has great color and unbelievable embossing. It is as nice as you will find although there is some very minor natural paper wrinkling to the back right.
Pennsylvania April 25, 1776 2s Very Fine-Extremely Fine. A superb example for the grade as it gives the appearance of a lovely CU note until closer inspection reveals otherwise. Some light staining in the signature area does little to detract and the back reveals folds indicative of a slightly higher grade.
Pennsylvania April 25, 1776 30s PMG About Uncirculated 55 EPQ. Astounding aesthetic appeal will follow this note wherever it goes. Surprisingly we have only had one New example and this note with a single horizontal fold looks as nice as most gems we recall having seen. The signatures are bold, the paper is fresh and bright and the margins and centering are perfect.
Pennsylvania April 10, 1777 1s/6d Red and Black PMG Fine 12. A very pleasing example of this much scarcer red and black type that is well signed, very colorful and which faces up more like a Very Fine note.
Pennsylvania April 10, 1777 3s PMG About Uncirculated 53 EPQ. This is a very lightly handled example of this Black Only elongated format note that was signed by Levi Budd. Its huge margins and near perfect centering make it as appealing a note as many of a much higher grade. A boldly printed example that offers considerable value based upon its extraordinary eye appeal.
Pennsylvania 1780 Interest Bearing Certificate. PA-2. Very Fine - Extremely Fine. Serial number 95 is found on this interest bearing certificate "given for supplies furnished this State, for the Use of the United States.....and for which the State is now justly indebted." Printed date 1780. Listed in Anderson as PA-2, High Rarity 6. A well embossed, lightly folded and problem free example of a rather scarce piece of Pennsylvania financial history. We recently sold a very similar example of this same type and grade for $345.
Pennsylvania April 20, 1781 6d PMG Choice Uncirculated 63. Through the holder this scarcer 1781 note sure looks like a screaming gem. It has great embossing, bold signature and serial number, healthy margins and picture perfect centering. A near gem note that certainly gives the appearance of something much nicer than that indicated by the assigned grade.
Rhode Island May 1786 6d Very Choice New. A broadly margined and very well centered example of this lowest denomination Rhode Island note.
South Carolina April 10, 1778 7s/6d About New. An absolutely stunning example of this strikingly rare denomination. The notes from the first sheet are the ones that are always seen in the marketplace and in high grade. The second sheet contained the 7s/6d, 15s, 20s and 30s denominations, of which the 7s/6d is second in scarcity to only the 30s note. This example is very well margined on all sides with the plate impression visible at the bottom and only a lower corner fold keeping the New grade out of reach. The outline of an old water stain is seen over the top half of the note. Two bold signatures remain as well as the Beehive vignette. The Newman 5th edition points out that a similarly graded note realized almost $2,000 in one of the Ford sales.
Virginia May 6, 1776 $4 PMG Very Fine 20. A fold or two is detected on this lightly circulated Virginia note. It has been almost a year since we sold an example of this denomination and only the fifth overall that we have handled. A really nice looking example of a scarcer denomination that should be well received by the colonial currency collecting community.
Virginia October 7, 1776 $15 Fine-Very Fine. A solid example that is bright and well margined with bold signatures intact. This is only the fourth example that we have sold of this more elusive denomination.
Virginia May 5, 1777 $6 PMG Extremely Fine 40 EPQ. This is likely the finest example we have handled of this elusive denomination that is very well signed, boldly printed and with just a couple of light folds that account for the grade. While Very Fine or lower Virginia notes are relatively available they are often not so accessible in the Extremely Fine or better grade range.
Virginia October 20, 1777 $4 PMG Very Fine 25. It has been over three years since we have handled an individual example of this more elusive denomination and only the fourth overall that we have sold. A sharply printed example that has fewer than the typical number of folds associated with the grade.
Virginia July 14, 1780 $10 Extremely Fine. One of the rare lower denomination rice paper notes which we are only offering for the second time this decade. This note has some of the nicest detail we have ever seen on a rice paper note as there are hardly any folds or crinkles. A couple of specks of ink erosion and a couple of minor edge tear repairs do very little to interfere with the eye appeal of this beautiful piece of Virginia fiscal history. This is a far above average example for the type.
Encased Postage

Fr. 1374 50c Fourth Issue Lincoln PMG Choice Uncirculated 63 EPQ. This has steadily become one of the most popular fractional types in the past few years and with good reason. Gems are encountered very infrequently so a nice Choice CU note is often the best that is readily available. This note has good margins for this typically tightly margined type and the color is good.
Fr. 1379 50c Fourth Issue Dexter Two Examples Good-Very Good. These notes served commerce well. There will be no returns on this lot for any reason.
Fr. 1266 10c Fifth Issue Choice New. This short key Meredith note has great eye appeal and superb color.
Fr. 1266 10ยข Fifth Issue PMG About Uncirculated 55. Lightly handled, good color is observed on this attractive, nicely margined Meredith.
Bronze Age (1970-1979)
Fr. 1309 25c Fifth Issue Choice New. Plenty of embossing and sizeable margins are seen on this short key Walker that is a bumped corner from the gem grade.

Mexico 10 Pesos El Banco Minero 1897-14 Pick S164A Twenty-seven Examples Poor or Better
Mexico 10 Pesos El Banco Minero 1910 Pick S171a Two Examples Good; Very Good.
One of the S164A notes is only half a note, therefore the poor and better grade. The S171a is a commemorative note for the first century of Mexican Independence. Fr. 2015-L* $10 1950E Federal Reserve Star Note. Gem Crisp Uncirculated.
We sold this note back in June 2005 with the following description..."With only 720,000 printed, the San Francisco district is a very scarce star and by far the lowest printing of the three districts from this issue. The margins are abundant with crisp paper and bright ink colors. Do not let the opportunity pass by to own this beauty. The Oakes value of $400 in CU seems shamefully low for a note of this quality." Our assessment hasn't changed and our prognostication abilities were right on key as this lovely note realized over $600 that day.

This $20 is from back plate 204 that was begun on December 21, 1934, sat in the plate vault for almost ten years, and it was not finished until March 18, 1944. This chain of events produced a back plate number with a macro-sized back plate number. Back plate 204 should have had a micro back plate number since it was begun during the micro era. This is the first of these that we have offered for this Friedberg number.
