Continental Currency May 10, 1775 $2 PMG About Uncirculated 55. Lightly handed, this attractive note from the first Continental emission is well-printed on both sides. The emblem is a hand with a thresher's flail and the motto is TRIBULATIO DITAT (affliction improves it). The nature print is raspberry and two filberts.
Continental Currency November 29, 1775 $6 PMG Choice About Unc 58 EPQ. This is a decently margined example from this early Continental emission that has retained bold signatures and serial number. The motto is PERSEVERANDO (by perseverance) while the emblem is a beaver that is gnawing down a tree. Frederick Kuhl and Anthony Morris, Jr. were the signers of this lovely example that earned the EPQ designation from PMG.
Continental Currency May 9, 1776 $6 Fine. Mordecai Lewis and Thomas Morris signed this well-margined $6 note. Several small splits are observed.
Continental Currency November 2, 1776 $5 PMG Very Fine 25. A bleeding hand is grasping a thorn bush in the emblem on this well-printed $5. The motto is SUSTINE VEL ABSTINE (either survive or give up). The nature print is betony and sage, the same print that was used on earlier Pennsylvania notes. Benjamin Levy and Benjamin Brannan were the signers of this example. Although it was believed for many years that Continental Currency signer Benjamin Jacobs was Jewish, research has indicated that was incorrect and therefore that leaves Levy as the only Jewish signer.
Continental Currency February 26, 1777 $6 PCGS New 62. Boldly printed and well-signed, this $6 from this challenging Baltimore issue has plenty of eye appeal. William Aisquith and Joshua (John) Barney were the signers. The emblem and motto are quite sharp on this attractive example.
Continental Currency January 14, 1779 $50 About New. Embossing is observed on this lightly handled example that exhibits one fold and light wear at the upper right corner. A couple of small, light stains are seen at the right margin of the face. The signatures of Daniel Wister and one of the Graffs remain bold, adding to the eye appeal of this $50 Continental.
Massachusetts October 18, 1776 4s/6d PCGS Very Fine 20. Nicely printed, this lovely Codfish was signed by Nathan Adams. Paul Revere printed the faces and John Gill printed the backs. The design on the back includes a cast cut of a pine tree. Gill was born in Charlestown, MA and served an apprenticeship with Samuel Kneeland. Gill and Benjamin Edes were partners from about 1755-75. Gill issued the newspaper, The Continental Journal. Only 5143 of these notes were printed and we have been able to offer few examples of this denomination over the years.
New Hampshire April 29, 1780 $3 Fine. Well-margined and well-signed, this hole cancelled example retains nice eye appeal. The signers were Joseph Pearson, James McClure, and Ephraim Robinson. Webber. James Davis printed these notes on thin paper from type. Davis was the first printer in that colony and began his business circa 1754-55. A repaired central split was mentioned by PCGS.
North Carolina December, 1768 £3 PCGS Apparent Fine 15. All four signatures remain visible on this piece of Proclamation Money. Among the endorsements on the back are Jesse Moody, Owen Bell, Joseph Thompson, and a Sullivan. A repaired central split was noted by PCGS.
