Description
Excessively Rare Florida $100 Brown Back - First Public Offering in Almost 50 Years
Tallahassee, FL - $100 1882 Brown Back Fr. 524 The First
National Bank Ch. # (S)4132 PMG Very Fine 25.A true wonder note from the Sunshine State, this offering is certainly just about the highlight of tonight's auction. It represents an excessively rare Florida type and denomination that has not made a public appearance since the inaugural Hickman-Oakes auction held in 1976. While seven banks in Florida issued $100 Brown Backs to the tune of 6,400 notes, just three are currently reported - all from this Tallahassee bank that issued a mere 967 $100 Brown Backs during its brief existence from 1889 until its liquidation in 1916. Fortunately for collectors, it is a pleasing mid-grade example that exhibits bold ink colors, dark pen signatures, and just honest, problem-free wear. Any estimate on a Florida trophy note of this magnitude is simply a guess, but based upon the popularity of rare examples from this southern state, a six-figure realization is very likely.
