This bank was chartered in 1881, the same year as President Garfield was assassinated. This denomination also carries the portrait of the slain president. The president for this bank was the inaptly named H.F. Poor. A touch of soiling is found on the back. Very Fine.

A nice Fine signed by both the assistant cashier and the vice president of this Fairfield County institution. We've sold this problem-free note once before, in our September, 2002 Greater Cincinnati Numismatic Exposition auction, where it went for $977.50. With the growing realization that $100 Third Charter notes are far scarcer than once believed, it should surpass that result tonight.

Fr. 1310 Milton 1R50.3a 50¢ First Issue Superb Gem New. From our January 1995 sale of the Martin Gengerke Collection, where it was described as, "Fully and deeply perforated, with evenly balanced, large margins, the bottom margin has a strip of paper outside the perforations. The overall quality is equal to any we've seen." At that time, the note had been estimated at $600-up, and it realized $742.50. It should now easily sail well past the four-figure mark. Included with the note is the original signed and sealed photo certificate from the Gengerke sale. While these seemed to be a good idea at the time, re-visited a decade later they certainly look corny. But the note is great.

Fr. 1314 (altered) Milton 2R50.1 50¢ Second Issue Choice New. In his Encyclopedia, Milt states, "The authenticity of this number is questionable, as no genuine example has been seen." That still stands. This piece has been altered from a Friedberg 1317 by the removal of its surcharges. Tom O'Mara was aware of this when he acquired it, and collected it as an altered piece to represent the number. It is extremely unlikely than any Fr. 1314's were produced, and in this cataloger's opinion, it's well past time to de-list these before more problems ensue. Were the alteration less obvious, we would be reluctant to sell this, but this piece is apparent enough that its presence in the market will not cause problems.

Pennsylvania April 10, 1777 20s Very Choice New. In spite of the reference works not recognizing these red notes as rare in higher grades, we've known for years that Red and Black 1777 Pennsylvania notes are all but nonexistent in uncirculated grade. The last one in this denomination that we handled was in 2002. The note is bright with deep original embossing and far better margined than what is generally seen.

South Carolina December 23, 1777 (error date) $2 About New. This is the much scarcer variety with the erroneous date printed on the face. The final "7" in the date was pen-corrected to a "6" prior to the note's issue. This "1777" error occurred only on the $2 and $4 denominations, and on very few of them. We've seen this error before on partially signed Remainders, but cannot recall another fully signed and issued example. This piece, with its extremely light center fold and no other signs of circulation, must be among the finest extant examples, if indeed it is not the finest. An exceptional find for the many collectors of this colony's notes, and a piece that could bring a runaway price.

Fr. 2 $5 1861 Demand Note Choice Extremely Fine. One of the finest $5 Demand Notes we have had the pleasure of handling. The note has a total of four folds, but each of them needs to be searched for before they can be found. The margins are incredible for the type, the colors are absolutely perfect, and the note has signatures that give the appearance of having just been scribed. This cataloger has always considered Demand Notes to be one of the most interesting and one of the most undervalued major areas of U.S. Currency. There are very few examples of this type that come anywhere near this piece for condition and yet it will not reach very far into five figures.

Fr. 3 $5 1861 Demand Note Extremely Fine. A lovely Boston Demand note with strong signatures, great eye appeal, and margins all the way around. The margins, in fact, are quite large all the way around, except for one small area around the top where it dips near the frameline, but does not touch it. The boldly printed back is beautifully centered and the note has the visual appeal of an XF or better piece. Even when Jim O'Neal purchased circulated notes, he had a great eye for quality. This is just such a note where the eye appeal far exceeds the technical grade. When that is the case, value generally far exceeds the technically expected price.

Fr. 8 $10 1861 Demand Note Choice Very Fine. The technical grade belies the attractiveness of this Demand note. The margins are extraordinary for the type, and the note is utterly without a flaw save for the normal circulation one would expect for the grade. It's free of soil, with perfect color, and the eye appeal of an XF or better note. Only about three dozen Fr. 8's are known--most considerably lower grade than this, and most of the other examples with less eye appeal than this note. A perenially undervalued type in this cataloger's opinion.

Fr. 8 $10 1861 Demand Note Very Fine. A really nice $10 Demand Note that has obviously circulated, but has remained totally free of problems. The pen signatures are strong and all the colors, both face and back, are as bright as the day the note was printed. It is also unusually, nicely margined for a Demand Note, with the margins clear of the frame line at all points. Although prices have increased recently this type has historically been and continues to be the most undervalued area of Federal currency in this cataloger's opinion. We sold this note twice before - most recently five years ago when it realized $9,625.

Fr. 11 $20 1861 Demand Note Very Fine. An intriguing piece which is a genuine but unsigned $20 Demand Note with eight small punch cancels at the signature blocks. It's printed on the normal paper from the regular plates, and is definitely not a Proof or Specimen note, but rather a regularly issued note that was neither overprinted with the serial number and red seal nor signed. It was likely produced as some sort of presentation piece. We sold this note once before, several years ago, with an estimate of $25,000-up. It ran considerably past there in active floor bidding, ending at $34,500. This ranks among the top three $20 Demand Notes in grade, as the colors and paper quality are exceptional. The note is problem-free save for a scattering of tiny pinholes, which affect nothing.

Broad even margins, beautifully bright colors and great paper originality are all immediately apparent on this lovely example of our Nation's first $1 bill. This beauty has everything it takes to please the fussiest of collectors.
