Fr. 43 $2 1874 Legal Tender Superb Gem New. Crisp, flashy and strictly original, with ideal paper surfaces, terrific color, broad, even margins and razor-sharp printing. These 1874 and 1875 Deuces are almost always found on a soft paper that imparts the feel of a worked-on note even when original. This one is a happy exception, with the kind of totally original, crinkly surfaces much appreciated by those truly familiar with our early currency.

Fr. 110 $10 1880 Legal Tender Superb Gem New. The first note from a truly magnificent cut sheet of Jackass Tens. Each of the four possesses natural paper ripple and deep, original embossing that is so seldom seen on notes that reach the market today. All four are well margined, crackling fresh pieces with superb colors and tremendous eye appeal. Each of the four notes has a blood-red seal and flashy, deep blue serial numbers that contrast perfectly with it. A very special cut sheet that we would hope remains together in spite of its being sold as four separate lots. This kind of freshness is rare on any note, particularly for a scarce Jackass number (under 70 known in all grades combined.)

Fr. 245 $2 1891 Silver Certificate Superb Gem New. This is the slightly scarcer of the two Windom numbers and it's a real beauty. This is serial number 36, a note whose history can be traced all the way back to an Abe Kosoff price list of the mid-1950's. The note has gorgeous margins, impeccable color and ideal original surfaces with easily-seen embossing. This is one of the early Windoms that has the deep blood red seal that helps make these notes so attractive. A great piece of currency.

Fr. 298 $10 1891 Silver Certificate Superb Gem New. Hugely margined all around and with its perfect original embossing plainly evident. This clean, explosively colored pristine note bears the single-digit serial number E8. Of the roughly 50 examples of this number known to exist, the vast majority of the uncirculated pieces come from the first nine notes produced. After these first nine notes, the lowest recorded serial number is well up into the five-figure range. The other single-digit notes are tightly held: two are permanently impounded and the other seven seldom reach the market. Other than the serial number 1 note, the last opportunity to purchase one publicly was when we sold this note in May of 1997. At that time, it more than doubled its $4500 estimate and ran to $9350 on the floor in a protracted bidding battle. Since we sold this note in 1997, the only other piece from this run to reach the market was the serial number 1 note which we sold in January of 2000 for $110,000. When we auctioned this piece in 1997, it had come out of a collection where it had resided since 1971. The collecting community is very lucky to have another opportunity to obtain an utterly Superb single-digit Tombstone with a wait of less than a decade.

Fr. 367 $10 1890 Treasury Note Gem New. An absolutely gorgeous example of an 1890 Treasury Ten. The centering of both sides is terrific, the original embossing is pronounced across the entire surface of the note, not just on the seal and serial numbers, and the colors are the equal of the day the note was printed. Treasury Tens are truly scarce in this top grade and this striking example, with its large brown spiked seal, is sure to attract considerable bidder attention.

This is one of only seven large examples from here listed in the new Kelly census, and by far the best. It's a bright, fresh and utterly original example with great color and sharp pen signatures, in short, a note with everything a collector could desire. But for a trace of handling and a miniscule spot of ink on the back this would easily rate the gem grade. Choice Crisp Uncirculated, a piece for the collector who wants only the finest.

This avidly collected location had two banks, both of which issued large notes only and both of which can be considered as just plain rare. All of the notes from here have been closely held for years in two major collections, with the community's other bank showing just three offerings, not one of which has come since 1971, and this bank showing no prior offerings of any kind at public sale until tonight. While well circulated and displaying a few splits and a petty hole, this note is rare enough so that the grade is secondary to its rarity and desirability. Very Good, a great opportunity for one fortunate collector to add something never previously available at public sale to the collecting fraternity.
