Low Serial Number 6 British North Borneo Nissan Estate 25 Dollars ND (1942) Pick UNL KNB5 PMG Choice Very Fine 35.
An absolutely incredible and crowning note from British North Borneo and the entire region. British North Borneo $25 notes are extremely rare, with this offering perhaps being the scarcest of them all. The Nissan Rubber Estate in Tawau, Sabah, was a large rubber plantation of Japanese ownership that dated to the early decades of the 20th-century. By the 1940s, it was the largest rubber plantation in the region and it employed almost 4,000 local workers in their operations. After Japanese forces defeated the British and took over control of the colony in 1942, previous British North Borneo Company issues were withdrawn and hastily replaced by these imitation notes issued by the Nissan Estate. They were never intended to circulate for long, and after approximately five months or so, they were also withdrawn and replaced by official Japanese Occupation notes. The smaller denominations of $1 and $5 infrequently appear, but the $10 and $25 denominations are quite possibly unique in issued format, according to the specialized guide book of this region. This incredible note has the benefit of a tiny, one digit serial number as well. Issuance of this denomination was assuredly small, and it appears that virtually all were redeemed in 1942 or thereabouts. Mild circulation and a few stains are mentioned for accuracy. This is the plate note imaged in the K.N. Boon catalog for banknotes of British Malaya, Malaysia, Singapore, and the colonies of Borneo. Part of an incredible collection offered in today's auction, with this note perhaps being unique.
