Incredible Hawaiian Silver Certificate Specimen of 1895

Hawaii Republic of Hawaii 10 Dollars 1895 (ND 1897) Pick 12s Specimen PMG Choice Uncirculated 64.
Hawaiian Banknotes and Specimen of the 19th-century are of the highest degree of rarity, explained in part by the tumultuous turn of events in the islands at that time. In 1893, the monarchy of Hawaii was overthrown and a Republic was declared. Initially, the U.S. Government took the stance of supporting the previous regime and proposed reinstating the monarchy. As it happened, the Republic of Hawaii remained for a few years, until Hawaii was eventually annexed by the United States in June of 1898.

Uniform series of coins and paper money were issued in Hawaii beginning during the Kingdom era. The first paper notes were issued in 1879 and 1880. The denominations were unusually high, and were not especially useful for ordinary transactions. As such, print totals and issuance were small and virtually all notes were redeemed. The same is true for Gold and Silver Certificates issued during the Republic era. Notes were dated 1895, printed in 1897, and delivered in 1899, after the Republic was already dissolved. All Hawaiian banknotes, from the Kingdom and Republic, were demonetized in 1905 and nearly all were redeemed. Exacting record keeping illustrates exactly how rare these banknotes actually are, which illustrates just how incredible any extant Hawaiian banknotes are. For instance, only 20,000 banknotes of the $10 denomination were issued, with 10,000 units issued dated 1880 and 10,000 issued dated 1895. Only 16 notes of the 20,000 issuance remain unredeemed. As was typical at the time, Specimen were printed to complement issued banknotes. This $10 Specimen was an unissued "Sample", prepared by the printer for official use by the Hawaiian Treasury or by issuing banks in Hawaii or abroad to illustrate what banknotes were in circulation. An extra wide left margin is mentioned for accuracy, along with a few pinholes in the selvage and in the bottom margin of the banknote portion. Hole punched and overprinted cancellations complete the process. At the time of cataloging, this is the first and only example of this denomination of in Specimen format graded in the PMG Population Report. Likewise, this is the first we have had the privilege to offer. It is important to mention that before the American Banknote Company ceased banknote production, it reprinted a small quantity of front Proofs of the 1895 Silver Certificate series. These 1981-1988 reprints are not to be mistaken for one of the original Specimen of the 19th-century, which is offered here. Of the highest degree of rarity and design missing from nearly all collections of banknotes.
