An Extraordinarily Rare German New Guinea Note

German New Guinea Treasury Note 10 Marks 14.10.1914 (1.1.1915) Pick 2b
This German colony was invaded by Australian forces at the beginning of World War I. The only significant engagement took place on September 11, 1914 near Rabaul, as the Germans and their native forces were defeated by the Australians. This led to the surrender of all of the German forces ten days later. Also, a need quickly developed for a circulating currency. These provisional notes were issued at Rabaul and circulated for only two months before being recalled and exchanged for the Australian Pound. This 10 Marks example was pen cancelled on January 1, 1915. However, the red ink used in the manuscript cancellation has greatly faded. All notes of this interim issue are marked as "rare" in Krause, which is an understatement. We are very fortunate to be able to offer not only two from this entire issue, but of this number in the last year. In fact this cataloger never dreamed of holding even one of these rare notes. The previous example we auctioned graded PCGS XF 40, is pen cancelled and brought $49,937.50 in September 2014. The current note grades PCGS Apparent Very Fine 30, with small edge tears, minor damage, stains, backing, and serial numbers of "1234" falsely added. It is still a rare and historic note.
