Description

Egypt National Bank of Egypt 100 Pounds 25.6.1898 (1913-1919) Pick 16fpm Front Printer's Model About Uncirculated.
Bright colors and hand-executed design elements are seen on this printer creation which closely resembles Egypt's famous 100 Pound banknote of the 1910s. Extremely rare or unique, this is a terrific printer prototype that has been mounted to matte board for presentation and is seen with a plethora of printer's notations.

The first auction appearance of this piece was in the April 2016 Spink Auction, Lot 936, titled "A Unique and Stunning Essay." It sold to Mr. Salem for just over £17,000, with the buyer's premium. An Auction Certificate from the sale is featured in Salem's book on Egypt (page 45), and on our website. The accompanying photograph was the subject of the view used in the "hand-executed" essay. Overall, the design elements are most closely associated with Pick 16 for type. While some of the design elements are printed, the central design was painted by an artist. This technique was used from time to time in the design process and generally retained in the printer's archives. The design elements and printing are outside of what is typically seen from these archives, warranting further research. PMG declined to certify the note. Heritage can not guarantee the authenticity and any Terms and Conditions regarding authenticity in this auction are not applicable to this lot. As such, there will be no returns for any reason.
