Cuba Empresa del Acueducto de Cardenas 3 Pesos 187_ Face and Back Proof Pick S112pAn almost impossible design to acquire. The name of the issuer translates to the Aqueduct Company of Cardenas, located in one of the smaller cities in Cuba. During Cuba's economic history from the Spanish Empire to the Republic, there has always been an official government or central bank, given the size of the economy. Hence, notwithstanding smaller scrip issuers that provided substitutes for small change, no large private banks issues are known. True to that fact, this single pick number is the only listed in the Specialized Issues edition of the Standard Catalog.
True to the company's name, vignettes connected to water are seen on the face of the note. Contemporary anti-counterfeiting devices are seen on the face and back. The printer CH Clayton and Co. in New York was also active only around the late 1800s. These two proofs, with the full face and back almost completely preserved, are truly rare pieces of this design. With the growing popularity of Cuban notes in recent years, heated competition will be expected before the hammer falls.
The face proof is PCGS Apparent About New 53, edge and internal damage. The back proof is PCGS Apparent About New 50, stained, minor edge damage. Both are mounted on cardstock. (Total: 2 notes)
