Description

Scarce Remainder from the Peiyang Tientsin Bank

China Peiyang Tientsin Bank 5 Taels ND (ca. 1910) Pick S2523r S/M#P35-3 Remainder PMG Choice Uncirculated 64.
One of the most exciting and beautiful designs ever created for a Chinese banknote, this type featured the portrait of Li Hongzhang flanked by two fierce red dragons with a diminutive waterfront scene at bottom. The bank was founded by Yuan Shikai, who eventually became President of the Republic of China. His foray into the banking industry occurred during a temporary retirement after the death of Empress Dowager Cixi. This example is a remainder, lacking signatures of official issue. Uncirculated and uniquely beautiful, this special type is a highlight from the final years of the Chinese Imperial era.
