One of Only Two In Private Hands

Canada St. John's, NF- Commercial Bank of Newfoundland 1 Pound ($4) 1.1.1874 Pick S109a Ch.# 185-14-02 PMG Choice Fine 15.
Early Newfoundland notes are incredibly scarce. Three examples of this note are known, one of which is permanently impounded in an institutional collection. The design here is perfect for the region, which was heavily dependent on the sea. At center is a woman seated on goods with ships in port behind her. The FOUR DOLLARS at center is flanked by a seal and halibut. The only other surviving note in public hands was heavily cancelled by pen and last offered at auction in 2012. This piece is wholesome and free of the distracting ink marks.
