Description

Well Preserved 1914 Issue

Bermuda Bermuda Government 1 Pound 2.12.1914 Pick 1 PMG Very Fine 25.
Printed by the American Bank Note Company of Ottawa, this design features the Crest of Bermuda on the left with the banner that reads "Quo Fata Ferunt" (Whither the Fates Direct). The red serial numbers are bold and the manuscript signature of J.T. Gilbert and printed signature of Allen F. Smith are distinct.
Issued at the start of The Great War, it is of no surprise that it remained the initial and only circulating banknote in Bermuda until 1927, as Great Britain faced severe cash shortages to her colonies. This could explain to why the handful of examples extant are mostly circulated, with only 7 total graded by PMG. The 1927 issue saw a facelift, so to speak, with the inclusion of a Royal portrait of King George V. Desirable in any grade and a chance not to be overlooked.
