Description
Hessler X184A $1,000 Certificate of Ownership in 4% Indebtedness of United States of America Apr. 3, 1894 Specimen PMG Choice Very Fine 35.Part of a $6,640,000 issue authorized by the Acts of March 3, 1893, and August 15, 1894, this certificate was to be issued in denominations of $1,000 and $10,000. The issue was occasioned by the government's purchase of land from the Cherokee Nation known as the Cherokee Outlet under the Act of March 3, 1893. This coincided with the opening of the area to settlement. Interestingly, final payment was not made until 1964 when the Cherokee finally settled their claims against the U.S. government for the actual value of the Cherokee Strip (Outlet) land opened to settlement in 1893.
The certificate, printed by ABNCo, features a large vignette of the headquarters of the Union Trust Co. of New York constructed in 1888-90, and demolished in 1929. A striking portrait of a Native American male wearing a bear claw necklace appears at top center. The green back has two panels; one with text related to the details of the issue and identification of registered owners and a second identifying the certificate, including an eagle and shield vignette and the denomination in a counter. The certificate is stamped SPECIMEN twice in red with a solid 00000 serial number and four small POCs in the signature lines. It additionally has the usual file folds as well as some stray pinholes and has two internal ABNCo Department stamps, one of which directs the Specimen's return to the Record & Specimen Department. Due to the prolonged litigation between the Cherokee Nation and the U.S. government which was not settled until 1964, it is unclear whether certificates of this type were ever issued. An intriguing piece of Oklahoma and Native American History which we have not previously offered.
