Description
King of Small Size Fr. 1700 $10 1933 Silver Certificate
Fr. 1700 $10 1933 Silver Certificate. PMG Gem Uncirculated 65
EPQ.Serial number A00059213A in this lot has had only two recorded public appearances. The first was when we auctioned it in January 2005 and the second was when our consignor acquired it out of a 2010 auction. It is a beautiful note with ideal color, natural paper wave, and embossing of the Treasury Seal and both serial numbers. All of these first rate traits earned this King of Small Size note not only the Exceptional Paper Quality grade modifier, but also the additional "Great Embossing" compliment on the holder.
The 1933 $10s are numismatically important as their obligation clause, "This certificate is issued pursuant to...," is not found on any other note and it is also the only design with the "Payable in silver coin to bearer on demand" statement. This issue was released only through the Treasury Cash Room in Washington, DC, during the first eight months of 1934. The Treasury Department then began an aggressive campaign to redeem the 1933 $10s as the 1934 $10 Silvers were now available in quantity and they had the current payable statement of, "In silver payable to the bearer on demand." A detailed look at Fr. 1700 can be found in the articles, www.spmc.org - "Release and Survival of $10 Series of 1933 Silver Certificates," in Paper Money, Society of Paper Money Collectors, September/October 2014, Vol. LII, No. 1, Whole No. 293, pages 316-21 and in the updated article, "Series of 1933 $10 Silver Certificates 90th Anniversary and Ten-Year Census Update," January/February 2024, Vol. LXIII, No. 1, Whole No. 349, pages 6-10.
High grade Fr. 1700 notes always bring strong prices and our current offering will be no exception. One can look forward to this beauty realizing over $50,000 based on recent results.
