Description

Fr. 1609* $1 1935A R Silver Certificate Star. PCGS Extremely Fine 45.
An "R" stamped star example from the ill-fated 1944 experiment by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing is offered here. As an attempt to test a new paper type, 1.184 million 1935A Silver Certificates were printed using the new, special paper and were overprinted with a large "S" at lower right on the face. A control group of the same number were printed with a large "R" using the BEP's regular paper. A total of 12,000 star notes of each variety were also emitted. At the conclusion of the experiment, the BEP blamed the paper money collecting community for its inconclusive results. Today, survivors of this experiment, especially the star variety, are sought after in any grade.
