Description
No Fr. 1609 Experimental Graded Higher
Fr. 1609 $1 1935A R Silver Certificate. PCGS Banknote Superb Gem
Unc 68 PPQ.Perfect centering within balanced margins and face to back registration that is oh-so-close to being perfect are highlights of this gorgeous "R" Experimental. It is a plate letter C note with a paper guide line marker in the lower right corner. The color is also perfect on this example that would be hard to improve on no matter how hard or long one looked. Third party grading statistics back up this observation. PCGS Banknote has graded a paltry one equal and none higher, while PMG has graded only one equal and none higher out of 1,037 examples examined. Track & Price tells us that this note last appeared at auction in 2014. At that time it was in a PCGS 68PPQ holder. The R and S Experimentals were released in the Chicago area on June 20, 1944 to test regular (R) and special (S) paper head-to-head. The wartime test was inconclusive and Treasury Department blame was directed at paper money collectors for removing the overprinted notes from circulation.
