Dazzling $10,000 Boston FRN - Newly Reported in the Track & Price Census

Fr. 2231-A $10,000 1934 Federal Reserve Note. PMG Choice Uncirculated 63.
Shrouded from the view of the numismatic community for many decades, this incredible $10,000 Boston FRN presents itself as a new addition to the Track & Price Census. T&P placed the number of currently known surviving representatives for Fr. 2231-A at just 17 examples prior to now, and this treasure brings the total up to 18. This note manifests one of the most well known small size types which many collectors have yearned to own over the years. Because of the type's large denomination, very few examples were set aside as mementos and souvenirs. PMG has certified just two representatives of this number at this grade level, with only six higher. Out of the combined 115 Series 1934 $10,000 notes across all districts encapsulated by PMG, nearly a third of the population hail from the New York district due to their preservation as part of the Binion hoard, which contained an impressive number of the type. While a considerable amount of the remaining 1934 $10,000s have achieved the Uncirculated or higher grade level, this piece is truly elusive because it has endured the test of time without attracting any meaningful condition impairments. In addition, it has not been subjected to any of the alterations commonly found on notes of this caliber. Taking a look through our archives, we find that the most recent example of this number to cross our auction block graded at the PMG Choice Uncirculated 64 EPQ level and brought $372,000 in May 2025. The last PMG CU 63 Fr. 2231-A representative we offered closed right at the $300,000 mark in January 2022. As prospective bidders survey this rarity, they will undoubtedly be left to wonder when another representative of this number at this lofty level will next surface. Tonight's final bid will likely reflect the growing demand for this magnificent FRN.

Estimate: $300,000 - up.
