Fr. 2230-E $10,000 1928 Federal Reserve Note. PMG About
Uncirculated 53.Series 1928 $10,000 notes are many times rarer than their 1934 counterparts, with this serial number E00000178A Richmond example poised to cross our auction block for the third time. Our first offering of this majestic note was at our May 1998 Spring Auction, and the second occasion was at our February 2005 offering of The Taylor Family Collection, where it was acquired by our consignor. PMG has graded from among all districts only seven Series 1928 $10,000 notes, compared to 113 Series 1934 $10,000s. We know that the 1934 population figure is under reported, as many of the 100 Binion Hoard $10,000 notes from the New York district have not made their way to PMG. However, combining the Stephen M. Sullivan census found in Small Sized High Denomination Notes, 2nd Edition with Track & Price population figures, we found only a total of ten Series 1928 representatives from all districts combined. Even that paltry number is deceiving, as the lone New York and San Francisco examples are locked away in the collection of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. That leaves only eight in the possession of collectors, with the example in this lot being one of the very nicest. Of the seven Series 1928 pieces from all districts graded by PMG, only one is graded higher, a 63, with none equal. The 63 is also a Richmond note, and we believe that it was the example auctioned by us for $504,000 in October 2022 when it was in a PMG 58 holder. That was the last Series 1928 $10,000 to cross the auction block. Since then, collectors' pent-up demand has become only stronger. The note in this lot will go a long way in satisfying that demand, even with the minor repair of sealing a few pinholes in the upper margin.
