Description
One of Two Fr. 2211-E* $1,000 Stars
Fr. 2211-E* $1,000 1934 Mule Federal Reserve State Note. PMG
Very Fine 30.
Track & Price may not list any Fr. 2211-E* notes as of yet because
none have appeared at auction in a very long time, dating back at
least 20 years. However, PMG has graded two pieces, the star in
this lot and also an AU 55 note. Serial number E00000647* in this
lot is an evenly circulated example in a comment free holder. It is
listed as the low serial number on page 336 of the tenth edition of
the Schwartz-Lindquist reference, while the documented high serial
number is E00000650*. Natural paper ripple rolls across the top
margin of this nicely centered Richmond $1,000 star. The conclusion
of our inspection is that this note is a solid representative for
the grade with great color and nice eye appeal. It would be a nice
representative from any district, let alone once as rare as
this.
To accompany this lot, is a affidavit from a local lawyer about how
he came to have the note in his possession. In 1987, a "little gray
haired widow" presented the note to a local bank teller asking for
smaller denominations. He was able to acquire the note and in 2002,
requested assistance from Jim Hughes at the Smithsonian. Hughes
confirmed it to be a discovery note. With no previously reported
1934 Richmond Stars, this was an important discovery.
Estimate: $25,000 - up.
