Description

Sole Finest Known $5 Boston Star

Fr. 1951-A* $5 1928A Federal Reserve Star Note. PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ.
When we auctioned this extraordinary piece in April 2013 for $12,925, we stated that it was "the only 1928A Boston district $5 Fed star graded higher than About New by either grading service." When examining the Track & Price census today, it can be determined that this splendid note still remains the sole finest listed in the reference. Similarly, the PMG Population Report discloses that our current offering is the highest graded example they have certified by a large margin. As Arthur and Ira Friedberg, the authors of Paper Money of the United States, affirm, FRNs from the 1928 and 1928A series were redeemable in gold. The Gold Reserve Act was signed into law in 1933, therefore putting an end to the "redeemable in gold" clause. Crackling fresh paper, stunning color, and balanced margins are all traits of this example.
