Description

Racine, WI- Commercial Bank $1 Jan. 1, 1857 G4 Proof PCGS Very Choice New 64.
The Commercial Bank of Racine opened in 1856 with H.S. Durand as president and Jacob W. Moore as cashier. It was not long before the bank ceased operations in 1862. This excessively rare Proof with a wonderful layout features a maid milking cattle at lower left, a sailor leaning on a capstan at lower right, and the state comptroller's die at upper left. The center depicts a farmer at left and a shipbuilder at right. Prior to now, we have only had the opportunity to auction this exact piece as a representative of the design. Formerly a part of The Eric P. Newman Collection, this was possibly the same note utilized as the plate note on page 388 of Chester L. Krause's book Wisconsin Obsolete Bank Notes and Scrip. This example is printed on India paper mounted to cardstock with four punch cancels in the signature lines. It is likely that this note is unique or nearly so.
