Unlisted Variety

Richmond, VA- C.R. Bricken 5¢ Sep. 3, 1861 Jones-Littlefield as PR60-081 Remainder PMG Very Fine 20.
Newspaper classified ads from April 13, 1861, the day after the start of the Civil War, show Bricken selling liquors, wines, and cigars with a side business as an insurance agent at the address shown on this note. This note is similar to an issue that was copied by S.C. Upham to produce facsimiles, but is printed in black ink and has some font and layout differences from the facsimile. This note is listed as a Remainder but obviously saw time in circulation even without a serial number. In addition, PMG mentions some tears which are quite small. We have handled a large number of 5¢ notes, both facsimiles and otherwise, but have not handled this variety previously.
