Description

Richmond, VA- Confederate House 50¢ Oct. 2, 1861 PMG Choice Fine 15.
The Confederate House was apparently a small hotel located at 76 Main Street in Richmond. From descriptions in newspaper notices, it sounds as if this set up along the lines of a boarding house. We can assume that the name was not changed to Confederate House until the commencement of hostilities in 1861, It is assumed that the proprietor (a D. Booth) was the signer of this note. The hotel changed hands in early 1862 and was closed and offered for rent at the end of November, 1863. The note itself is typical of the period, with a dog head representing Fidelity at bottom center and two decorative end panels providing the note's only ornamentation. PMG notes a tear repair whose extent and location are difficult to detect through the holder.
