Description
The Best of Two Known Examples
Richmond, VA- Commonwealth of Virginia $500 Sep. 25, 1861 Cr.
1861-B PMG Choice Very Fine 35.One of the classic Southern States rarities, this was the largest denomination issued by the Commonwealth during the Civil War. It was printed by Hoyer & Ludwig and is in most respects superior to their work for the Confederate government. The note features an allegorical vignette of Commerce, Ceres, and Navigation that was also used by Hoyer & Ludwig on T17 Confederate $20 Treasury Notes that were in use at the same time this note was in circulation. An oval portrait of Washington and an extravagantly detailed red underprint complete the design. 6,150 $500s were issued, with a scant 217 remaining outstanding in late 1863. Today only 2 examples are believed to be extant, with this note besting the Eric P. Newman Collection note, which was backed, toned, and repaired, by a pretty wide margin in terms of condition.
