First War Issue Commonwealth of Virginia $50

Richmond, VA- Commonwealth of Virginia $50 Aug. 13, 1861 Cr. 2 Jones-Littlefield VT02-08 PMG About Uncirculated 50.
A note that was part of the first wartime issue made by the Commonwealth of Virginia, authorized by the Acts of April 30 and June 28, 1861. 12,300 $50s of this design were issued and only 268 were outstanding in late 1863. The design features a large rendition of the Virginia coat of arms at left, an allegorical vignette which was also used on T28 CSA $10 Treasury Notes at center, and an oval portrait of John Tyler at right. Red design elements complete the attractive design, executed and printed by Hoyer & Ludwig. It is superior in many respects to the notes that the firm did for the Confederate government. There is faint evidence of previous mounting on the back which is of little concern on a note of this rarity.
