Rare $100 Virginia Treasury Note

Richmond, VA- Commonwealth of Virginia $100 Aug. 13, 1861 Cr. 1 Jones-Littlefield VT02-06 PMG About Uncirculated 53.
One of the great notes from Virginia, this $100 was one of only 6,150 notes issued of this denomination from a series authorized by the Acts of April 30, 1861 and June 28, 1861. By late 1863, only 83 $100s remained outstanding. Hoyer & Ludwig arguably did some of their finest work on this first wartime emission by the Commonwealth. This $100 features a portrait of Washington with an allegorical vignette of perhaps Agriculture at left. A wonderfully detailed red protector depicts two allegorical women and the denomination 100. This note will take any collection to which it is added to the next level. The fact that there is faint evidence of previous mounting on the back has virtually no impact on a note of this importance and beauty. This note is only the fourth example that we have been able to offer in any of our public auctions, and is one of only about a half dozen known to us at present.
