Description

St. Albans, VT- St. Alban's Bank $3 Aug. 15, 1862 G6c PMG Very Fine 20.
The bank was chartered in 1853 and survived the northernmost Confederate raid of the Civil War in 1864. It was succeeded by the Vermont National Bank of St. Albans which was organized on July 24, 1865. The $3 design features a vignette of a farrier shoeing a horse with ample supervision at left, a portrait of a Native American woman at center, and a vignette of a farm woman at right. A large red THREE protector completes the design. There are manuscript endorsements on the face and back of the note indicating that the note had been redeemed on December 11, 1875 by Bradley Bartow, who was President of the Vermont National Bank at the time. Earlier, Bartow was the Cashier of the St. Alban's Bank during the Confederate raid. PMG mentions pinholes. An interesting artifact of Vermont banking and Civil War history that is quite scarce and seldom offered.
