Description

Texana, TX- Jackson County $1 Oct. 1, 1862 Medlar 3 PMG Very Fine 20.
Founded in 1832, Texana is one of the oldest Anglo-American settlements in Texas. Interestingly, Texana's first name was Santa Anna, and it was named for Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. At this time, he was a popular Mexican general and politician. He was elected president of Mexico as a liberal in 1833, but by 1834, he changed his stance and became an autocratic Centralist. In 1835, the residents of Santa Anna changed the name to Texana. When the railroad bypassed Texana in the 1880s, the town lost the county seat and it became a virtual ghost town in just a few years. This extremely scarce piece features red, green, and black ink colors; the "Jackson County Treasury Warrant" text is red, the overprints are green, and the rest is black. The only vignette is a cannon at bottom center. Medlar states in his book that there are five to ten examples extant, but we only know of four pieces including this one, with our current offering being the nicest of the four. There are no issues mentioned on the third-party label.
