Description

Texana, TX- Jackson County $1 Nov. 1, 1862 Medlar 3 PMG Fine 12 Net.
We have auctioned only one Medlar 3 example previously. It was this exact note as part of the William Bond Collection and it returns for an encore auction appearance after a hiatus of almost 15 years. This issue is known for its extravagant use of red, green, and black ink. Texana is one of the oldest Anglo-American settlements in Texas as it was founded in 1832. Interestingly, Texana's first name was Santa Anna and it was named for Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. At this time he was a popular Mexican general and politician. He was elected president of Mexico as a liberal in 1833, but by 1834, he changed his stance and became an autocratic Centralist. In 1835, the residents of Santa Anna changed the name to Texana. When the railroad bypassed Texana in the 1880s, the town lost the county seat and it became a virtual ghost town in just a few years. This rare note has been repaired by adding the extreme left end. The work was skillfully executed with the help of a piece from another note and greatly enhances the appearance of this example.
