Rare Sabina City Company $100 Certificate

Sabina City, TX- Sabina City Company $100 July 1, 1839 PMG Choice Very Fine 35.
The city of Sabine, TX, was founded in 1836 by Sam Houston and Philip A. Sublett. It was first called Sabina City, which is the name on our current offering. In 1839, the name was changed to Sabine Pass. This piece features a vignette of a seated Native American looking towards the city (presumably Sabine) at center. This certificate, which was issued to W.H. Chambers, was redeemable in "City Lots or Lands," but it is likely that these also circulated as methods of payment for other goods and services. Certificate "No. 1024" was signed by David Brown as Secretary and Samuel Stivers as President of the Sabina City Company. PMG notes some tape repairs of some edge splits, which are of little importance considering that this may very well be the highest quality example of the few we have auctioned.
