Description

Nacogdoches, TX- Kelsey H. Douglass $3 Jan. 1, 1840 Medlar 3 PMG Very Fine 25.
Kelsey Douglass was a well respected merchant in Texas and Louisiana. His paper money was payable at his store in Nacogdoches or his office in New Orleans. The notes circulated locally at par, but Douglass died suddenly on October 4, 1840, and his widow, Minerva Benton Douglass, went bankrupt paying off his obligations. The $3 design features a Native American warrior representing Shawnee Chief John Linney at upper left, vignettes of a train and steamboat at center top and bottom, and a vignette of a farmer harvesting at right. This note has ink burn from the manuscript cancellation written across the face, but thankfully none has eroded.
