Description

Austin, TX- Travis County 50¢ Sep. 18, 1862 Medlar 155 PMG Very Good 8 Net.
The site for the Republic of Texas' new capital was chosen in 1839 and named Waterloo. Shortly thereafter, the name was changed to Austin. In 1840 Travis County was formed, named after William B. Travis. While the Republic's capital was briefly moved back to Houston, by 1845 when Texas agreed to be annexed by the United States, Austin was firmly entrenched as the state capital. The 50¢ note is printed in blue ink with a bold red FIFTY CENTS protector. It was payable in state warrants or Confederate treasury notes when presented in sums of $5.00. PMG mentions tape repairs of splits and tears. This is the first example of this design that we have offered in one of our public auctions.
