Description

Nashville, TN- Childs & Stephenson $25 Advertising Note ND (ca. 1864-65) Schafluetzel-Carson N-M.Chi-25 Vlack UNL PMG Very Fine 25.
The particulars regarding this firm have been quite elusive, but the chance discovery of a small newspaper item from the Nashville Daily Union of January 26, 1865, now parts the curtains to some extent. Childs & Stephenson were apparently attempting to wind up their business, offering very attractive prices on "a stock of Military and Citizens' Clothing, and Furnishing Goods, complete in every department...." Parts of this text are almost identical to that appearing on this advertising note. The news item goes on to state that the building, in an ideal business location, was for rent and would be ideal for anyone looking to invest in an established business. All of this allows us to now state that these notes were issued well after Union forces had occupied the city for the rest of the war in late February 1862, likely in late 1864 or early 1865. The note itself features a version of the vignette used on T39 and T40 CSA $100 Treasury Notes flanked by vignettes of buildings at left and an industrial complex at right. The denomination, in both words and numerals, appears on the face, printed in green ink. This note serves as the plate note in the Schafluetzel-Carson Tennessee catalog and is believed by those authors to be unique.
