Description

Clarksville, TN- Bank of America $20 18__ as G64a Schafluetzel Cr-B.Ame-20-1Pf Proof PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ.
Reportedly chartered in 1850, the bank did not commence active operation until 1856. Due to unwise speculation in Arkansas farm land and the slaves to work it, the bank suspended on September 6, 1858. Some reports indicated that Memphis interests planned to resuscitate the bank in December 1861, but it is believed that those efforts were ultimately squashed with the fall of Clarksville to Union forces in mid-February 1862. The focal point of the note is a vignette of a farmer taking a break with his children in the field flanked by portraits of bank president M.D. Davie and Cornelia Davie, his wife. The note is printed on India paper with four small POCs in the signature lines. Eight examples of this note appeared in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale, a number of which were impaired unlike this premium quality note.
