Description

Unionville, SC- Cotton Planters Loan Association of the Fifth Congressional District of South Carolina $50 May 15, 1862 Sheheen 1102 PMG Choice Uncirculated 64.
Notes from this issue were backed by cotton valued at 6ยข per pound, as well as by the personal property of the stockholders. The notes were optimistically promised to be redeemable in gold within six months of the raising Union blockade of the South Carolina coast. This, of course, never occurred during the duration of the war. The center vignette depicts slaves harvesting cotton. A portrait of a young woman appears at upper left and a portrait of John C. Calhoun is at bottom right. The note, printed by F.W. Bornemann, is printed on the coupon portion of an unissued $500 7% Spartanburgh & Union Rail Road Company bond.
