Description

Scituate, RI- Hamilton Bank $3 Sep. 14, 1847 G6 Durand 2130 PMG Fine 12.
The bank was incorporated in 1818 as the Scituate Bank and was shuttered by state authorities after several charter violations were discovered. The bank was reopened in 1841, with a title change to the Hamilton Bank. The bank subsequently suffered a robbery which forced it to repudiate its circulating notes which could not be positively identified as legitimate. It struggled on for a few more years until it was placed in receivership in 1849. The $3 design features an allegorical woman placing a garland around the neck of an eagle, flanked by vignettes of a farmer sharpening a large scythe at left and a sailor holding his hat standing by a bale. Two large gray 3 protectors flank the center vignette. Very scarce and seldom offered.
