Description

Bristol, RI- Eagle Bank $2 Jan. 1, 1851 as G16 Durand 112 PMG Fine 12.
The Eagle Bank was organized in 1818 and remained in business until becoming the National Eagle Bank of Bristol (charter 1562) in 1865. The $2 design features a vignette of an allegorical woman floating in air presenting a shield with a 2 on it to Prosperity, or perhaps Agriculture, who is reclining by a cornucopia filled with produce and holding grain. A smaller vignette of an eagle is to the left and a vignette of Liberty standing by a column appears in the left end. Durand rated this as an R7 rarity, estimating fewer than six notes extant. This is the only $2 of which we are presently aware. In its only other appearance in one of our auctions, it realized $660 in our 2021 FUN Currency Signature Auction.
