Description

Anthony Village, RI- Coventry Bank $2 Sep. 1, 1862 G4b Durand 21 PMG Very Fine 25.
The Coventry Bank was incorporated in 1850 and remained operational until 1865, when it was succeeded by the Coventry National Bank, charter 1161. This deuce possesses a beautifully intricate layout. At left is Hope leaning on an anchor along with two females gazing into the distance, at center is another depiction of Hope reclining with a shield containing an anchor while sailing vessels traverse the high seas in the background, and at right is Benjamin Franklin deep in thought. A white TWO overprint outlined in red at bottom center finishes the design. We have only auctioned an example of this design once previously. That piece, which was none other than the note in this lot, realized $690 in July 2021. Our current offering and the Haxby Plate Note likely represent the surviving population of deuces of this variety from the bank. PMG mentions a few specks of minor rust along the right margin, an insignificant impairment which can be overlooked when considering this representative's great rarity.
