Description

Philadelphia, PA- Philadelphia City Savings Institution 15¢; 25¢; $1 1837-38 Very Good-Fine or Better.
First mention of the Philadelphia City Savings Institution is found in June 1835. Although indicating in 1839-40 that it intended to seek a bank charter under the banner of the City Bank, it does not appear that this happened (a City Bank in Philadelphia was organized in 1855 but does not appear to be related to this effort). A notice in 1844 informing shareholders who had received thirty percent that they would receive another 5% dividend suggests that the bank had been placed in receivership. The 15¢ note has some minor staining while the $1 has some minor soiling on the back. All three notes are repair-free. (Total: 3 notes)
