Description

Lewisburg, PA- Lewisburg Bank $5 18__ as G4b Proof PMG About Uncirculated 55.
Previously known as the Lewisburg Savings Institution, the bank was organized in 1857 and remained in business until 1865 when it became the Lewisburg National Bank. The $5 design features a vignette titled The Twins depicting allegorical women representing Agriculture and Industry seated with a factory and livestock in the background. This is flanked by two unidentified male portraits, clearly taken from life and probably of men connected with the bank or the community. A small duck family vignette is at bottom center. The note has an orange overall tint and a large orange and white FIVE protector, completing the design. The note is printed on India paper with four POCs in the signature lines. PMG notes that, regrettably, the upper right corner is missing from this piece. There were a fairly large number of examples of this variety and denomination in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale, but it remains quite popular with collectors due to its layout and visual appeal.
