Description

Franklin, PA- Venango Bank $1 Oct. 23, 1862 (Faded) G2a Hoober 126-1 PMG Choice Fine 15.
The bank was a late entrant in the banking business, being organized in 1862 with a capital of $100,000. Its career was short lived as it was succeeded by the Venango National Bank of Franklin in 1865. Several banks, including the Venango National Bank of Franklin which was placed in receivership on May 1, 1866, suspended when the New York banking firm of Culver, Penn & Co., which had numerous banking investments in Pennsylvania, collapsed on March 28, 1866. The $1 design features a vignette of a farm girl waiting in a blacksmith shop for her wheelbarrow to be repaired at left and the state free banking die at lower right. The rest of the face features two green and black denominational counters, a green 1-1-1 protector, and a green ONE protector panel at bottom center. Happily, the note is free of both repairs and meaningful impairments.
