Clearfield, PA- Clearfield County Bank $5 Sep. 9, 1863 G4a Hoober 68-2 Remainder PMG Choice Very Fine 35.
The bank opened in December 1860 and remained in business as a state bank until voluntarily surrendering its charter on May 12, 1865. It then continued as a private bank under the same name until being placed in receivership on July 17, 1878. The bank was revived as a collection and exchange office and failed for a second and final time on December 15, 1891. The $1 design features a family river rafting scene at center that is flanked by the state banking die at left and a small bear vignette at bottom center. Identical end panels each contain an ornate bicolor 5 counter. A green protector panel covers the signature spaces.
