Description

Altoona, PA- Lowder & Steely $1 Tiffany Commission Scrip ND (ca. 1873-74) PMG Choice Extremely Fine 45.
This was one of those "If we don't have it , you don't need it!" merchants that sold a wide range of goods from ladies underwear to carpets and window shades. It operated under the banner of the City Bazaar at the corner of 11th Street and 11th Avenue in Altoona. This scrip was issued during the Panic of 1873 to encourage cash sales by offering a discount (in this case, 5%) on such transactions. This large format note features vignettes of America seated with the Stars and Stripes at left, another maiden seated on an eagle holding aloft a ribbon with "SELDOM EQUALLED NEVER EXCELLED" at center, and the portrait of a young woman at right. The back has text detailing information about the firm, its product offerings, and the scrip redemption rules. A lovely fully framed example from a issuer whom we have not previously offered in any of our public auctions.
