Description

Poughkeepsie, NY- Middle District Bank $5 Oct. 1, 1827 G48 PMG Very Fine 20.
The bank was organized in 1811 and remained in business until suspending in June 1829 and being placed in receivership shortly thereafter. The design of the $5 is rather sophisticated for the time, with a realistic vignette of a ram at center flanked by end panels containing a vignette of agricultural tools and implements at left and another of an eagle with a rendition of the New York state coat of arms at right. This design was engraved by Peter Maverick, the son of Peter R. Maverick. The son engraved designs for 35 banks in the states of Georgia, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island. Several members of the Maverick family were in the engraving profession. This included his wife, who was a xylographer. The note is in pleasant evenly circulated condition and is free of repairs or meaningful impairments.
