Description

New York, NY- Showler's Oyster House 2¢ ND (ca. 1862-63) PCGS New 62.
Thomas Showler is listed as a 28 year old oyster dealer in the 1860 Federal Census for New York City and was undoubtedly the issuer of this small pink cardboard chit. Showler's Oyster House was located at the corner of Broadway and Bleecker Street in Greenwich Village These small cardboard notes were popular during the Civil War because they were more durable than paper scrip and cheaper than tokens. The other reason is that they were small and could be rather easily misplaced and never presented for payment.
