Description

New York, NY- New York Exchange Bank $3 Jan. 15, 1840 Very Fine;
Utica, NY- W.O. McClure 3¢ ND (ca. 1864) Crisp Uncirculated.
The New York Exchange Bank (not to be confused with a later 1850s bank of the same name) was a fraudulent institution whose only purpose was to float as much of its circulation as possible with no intention of redeeming it. The $3 features a canal scene flanked by vignettes of Justice standing at left and Ceres standing at right and has seven POCs in the signature lines.
Warren O. McClure owned a store dealing in books, stationery, and music at the address shown on the note beginning in 1864. The note is printed in green ink with small, perhaps as-made, paper pinch in the top right margin. (Total: 2 notes)
