New York, NY- Merchants Banking Co. $1 Post Note Apr. 4, 1840 Remainder PMG Very Fine 25.
The Merchants Banking Company was a fraudulent institution whose main business was issuing post notes. By 1840, the company was routinely listed in banknote tables as "doubtful." This $1, which was a four month post note, featured an early train vignette flanked by a vignette of Hope at left and two cherubs performing music in the end panel at right. The note also has a brown decorative back. This remainder lacks a cashier's signature.
