Description

New York, NY- Mechanics Banking Association $50 18__ G20 Proof PCGS Very Choice New 64.
The Mechanics Banking Association was organized in 1838 and remained in business until 1865, when it became the National Mechanics Banking Association of New York, charter 1075. There are a multitude of appealing vignettes included in this piece's design. At left is Liberty with her pole and cap, at center is a sailor with his rifle conversing with two Native Americans, and at right is Manufacturing with a hammer and anvil as well as other symbolic tools. On either side of the central illustration are oval medallion head dies, and at lower center is an arm and hammer. The note is mounted on cardstock, the signature spaces have been cut out, and PCGS mentions a small edge tear at top center. There is a current surviving population of around three examples of this design in Proof form. We auctioned a PMG 65 EPQ representative in October 2020 for $900.
