Description

Buffalo, NY- Commercial Bank $5 UNL PMG Choice Uncirculated 64 EPQ.
The Commercial Bank was a creation of George Rathbun, a large developer and businessman in Buffalo during the 1830s, who ultimately became overextended and funded his enterprises with fraudulently obtained funds. The house of cards collapsed in 1836 and Rathbun eventually spent time in prison, convicted of fraud. This Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Co. designed note is not listed in Haxby but fits perfectly in the gap left between other notes of that series.
